FORT ROSS STATE HISTORIC PARK
Fort Ross State Park is located on the Sonoma County Coast, 11 miles northwest of the town of Jenner on Highway One, and two hours driving time north of San Francisco. Fort Ross is located on a wave-cut marine terrace between the ocean to the southwest and the high, forest-covered hills to the northeast. The park contains about 3,200 acres of spectacular wildlands. In addition to the fort compound, there is a visitor center with interpretive exhibits, a museum bookstore, staff offices and a research library. Visitors may walk past the Call ranch house and gardens, and they may visit the Russian Cemetery and the old Russian orchard. Ample parking is available. There is handicapped parking close to the fort. The Visitor Center, restrooms and portions of the fort compound are handicapped accessible. Other State Parks in the area are Salt Point State Park and Kruse Rhododendron State Reserve, eight miles north. Sonoma Coast State Beach is fourteen miles south. Detailed Map
Camping: The Reef Campground two miles south of Fort Ross on Highway One has twenty primitive campsites which are located in a wind-protected canyon. Tables, stoves and food lockers are available. Flush toilets and drinking water are nearby, although shower facilities are not provided. The campground is not suitable for large recreational vehicles because of very limited turning space. The campground is open April through November. Picnicking: Picnic facilities are located near the Visitor Center parking lot, next to the historic Call Ranch House to the west, within the fort compound and at the Fort Ross Sandy Cove. Ocean Access: Visitors may walk to Sandy Cove, a protected beach just below the fort, and along the coastal terrace above the Fort Ross North Cove. Ocean access points with unpaved parking are located at Windermere Point one mile north of the park entrance, and on the marine terrace which can be reached by way of the Reef Campground entrance two miles south of the fort. During open seasons abalone and rock fish may be found in the coastal waters. Scuba divers can explore the wreck of the S.S.Pomona, a unique example of the 19 th century maritime history. Dogs are allowed only in the main parking area. Dogs are allowed in the campground. They must be on a six-foot leash at all times and be in a tent or vehicle at night. Programs include public presentations on the history of Fort Ross, as well as full day and overnight Environmental Living Programs which emphasize hands-on curriculum for fourth and fifth grade students. The cultural diversity of the historic Fort Ross inhabitants is celebrated on regularly scheduled Cultural Heritage Days, including the major yearly event on the last Saturday of July. Salt Point is located seven miles north of Fort Ross on Coast Highway One. Camping and Hiking: There are 109 family campsites at Salt Point State Park. Thirty sites are on the ocean side of the highway at Gerstle Cove Campground, and 79 sites are on the east side of the highway at Woodside Campground. There are also 20 walk-in sites and a group camp. Salt Point includes 6,000 acres, and there are more than 20 miles of hiking trails along the shoreline and through the forest extending up to the prairie at the top of the ridge.
